If you’re wondering where to take family photos near you and want to keep things simple and low-stress, then I’ve got a suggestion for you. Look no further than your very own neighborhood park!
During my time as a portrait photographer, I’ve taken photos at all kinds of locations. While it can be fun to pick a gorgeous location that requires a hike or a long drive to get to, that doesn’t work for everyone! You can get family portraits in your own backyard that are just as beautiful, and probably a lot less stressful.
YES! Parks are one of the best places to take family photos. There is usually plenty of nice greenery to use as a backdrop, and fun playgrounds to keep kids occupied. If you’re thinking to yourself, “my local park is ugly”, then I’m going to ask you to reconsider. People often overthink their photoshoot locations, but the truth is that most good photographers can capture great photos just about anywhere. Family portraits are about the fun that you have together, not the stunning (or not-so-stunning) location you were at when they happened.
If you’re a fan of the lifestyle, unposed look (like I am), then a great way to achieve that is to forget about the camera, have fun, and just play around. A lot of people think they need to stand still and look at their photographer, but in fact, the opposite is true! Some of the best photos come when you are looking at your spouse or your children and laughing naturally. And what better way to get your family to laugh than to play around at your local park?
Stop overthinking it, and just ask your photographer if you can take pictures at the local park that your kids regularly play at. The kids will be excited to visit one of their favorite spots (which means more natural smiles!) and you’ll have less stress about what to pack, how early you have to leave to get there, and all of the “what ifs”. Baby spits up all over that cute outfit and you forgot to pack an extra? No worries! Just run home to grab a change of clothes while your photographer focuses on getting photos of the rest of the family.
I know this might be hard to believe, but these family photos were taken at a tiny neighborhood park with houses on both sides!
Do you like having options? Parks are great because you can move around from place to place, getting action shots on the swings, cuddly photos in the grass, and more. Keep things interesting for the whole family, and ensure that you have plenty of great photos to choose from your gallery.
